Africast over ontbossing in Afrika

5 Aug 2025 Ik hoorde deze podcast en hij is zeker het beluisteren waard: 

 Over klimaatverandering horen we bijna dagelijks en het IPCC waarschuwt: 

zonder ingrijpen moeten we later deze eeuw flink ingrijpen om de menselijke invloed tegen te gaan. 

Iets wat bomen perfect kunnen Helaas, de ontbossing raast door. Afrika verloor al 10% van zijn bossen, en in het Congobekken verdwijnt jaarlijks een gebied ter grootte van Nederland. Er bestaan oplossingen, maar het lijkt wel of schijnoplossingen het debat domineren. Gelukkig spreken met met Danielle van Oijen (Milieudefensie) over hoe we om moeten gaan met ontbossing: welke valkuilen moeten we vermijden, en hoe beschermen we wél effectief de bossen op onze aarde?

Inmates Breathe a Sigh of Relief as Renovation of Facility's Cells Underway

Every human being's most basic need is decent accommodation. A good shelter makes a person feel secure and comfortable. For months, inmates at Kasungu Prison endured congested cells after Cyclone Chido devastated the facility on December 15, 2023. This disaster added to the hardship of incarceration, as congestion worsened when two damaged cells were closed, forcing inmates to be shifted into already overcrowded spaces.

However, thanks to financial support from the National Prisons Headquarters through its Projects Section, renovations have commenced. Inmate Harris Brown commended the department for the timely intervention.

[16:30, 10-09-2025] Harry Mwaungulu?: Sir, this is a story from Kasungu prison,, heavy winds blown off the prison cells at the station. One of the reason is because the prison infrastructure have very little trees around it that can act as wind break. We have been planting trees at this station but early harvesting for fuel wood have been taking place more than the trees we plant. Road construction project also removed a big portion of our woodlot at this Kasungu prison station. I went there in July I saw the place needs more and more trees. I talked with the officer incharge and his management team to intensity tree planting around the buildings.  It helps in times of heavy winds.

Dit bericht toont aan dat het planten en onderhouden van windsingels heel nuttig is. In Malawi kan het behoorlijk stormen vooral in de regentijd. We hebben al eens meegemaakt dat het dak van de Social Hall in Zomba eraf waaide. Dat heeft toen wel een stimulans voor het boomplant project betekend omdat er veel meer mensen overtuigd waren van het nut van het planten van windsingel. Ik hoop dat het in Kasungu ook zo werkt. We zijn nu bezig met de laatste voor bereidingen voor het nieuwe plantseizoen en ik hoop dat de nieuwe kwekerijtjes snel van start kunnen gaan.
